Duties

As a Welder (GL-MAN-09) or Machinist (GL-MAM-11) within the Quebec Waterways Unit, your key responsibilities will include:

• Providing welding, machining, and fabrication services, as well as repairing and modifying equipment, vehicles, machinery, and structures.
• Inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying a variety of mobile, stationary, or floating equipment, machinery, vehicles, and other structures using welding, machining, and fabrication techniques. You will also manufacture components, structures, and hardware parts.
• Maintaining records, logs, timesheets, and databases; gathering required information; preparing time and resource estimates; and making recommendations related to purchase orders.
• As a machinist, you may be required to carry out design work.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this process is to staff:

• One (1) full-time temporary Welder (GL-MAN-09) position for a fixed term (temporary), with the possibility of extension or an indeterminate appointment; and, 
• One (1) full-time temporary Machinist (GL-MAM-11) position for a fixed term (temporary), with the possibility of extension or an indeterminate appointment.

📍 Work location: 

• Welder (GL-MAN-09): Carillon Canal National Historic Site in Saint-André-d ’Argenteuil, QC, or Lachine Canal National Historic Site in Montreal, QC.
• Machinist (GL-MAM-11): Chambly Canal National Historic Site in Chambly, QC.

This process may also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with varying employment statuses, security levels, and language profiles, in the same location or elsewhere in the country.

💰Salary:

• Welder (GL-MAN-09): $33.84 to $36.79 per hour (salary under review).
• Machinist (GL-MAM-11): $36.85 to $40.05 per hour (salary under review).

🎓 Education:

• Vocational Diploma (DEP) in a relevant field, including but not limited to machining, metal fabrication and structural steelwork, industrial construction and maintenance mechanics, welding, or an equivalent combination of certifications, trade qualifications, and relevant experience.

Degree equivalency

💬 Language requirements:

• French essential.

✨ Experiences: 

• Significant experience in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of equipment, machinery, or structures, and in the fabrication or modification of components using machining and welding techniques.
• Significant experience in the inspection, preventive maintenance, and repair of electro-hydraulic and electromechanical systems.
• Experience using computer hardware and software applications (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and email).

*Significant experience is defined as at least three (3) years of experience acquired within the last ten (10) years.

🧠Knowledge:

• Knowledge of machining methods, practices, materials, and techniques.
• Knowledge of industrial mechanics and welding methods, practices, materials, and techniques.
• Knowledge of mathematics as applied to shop work.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety standards in shop and field work environments.

 

• Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, and work instructions.
• Ability to design, fabricate, repair, and maintain mechanical components using specialized welding and machining equipment. *Essential for Machinist (GL-MAM-11) only.
• Ability to inspect mechanical systems and determine required repairs.
• Ability to prepare short technical reports.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.

📝 Conditions of employment:

• Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status security clearance.
• Hold and maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s licence recognized by the applicable province or territory.
• Agree to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
• Be available for standby duties and overtime assignments.
• Be willing and able to work in a variety of locations and terrains, under different weather conditions, as required by operational needs.
• Agree to wear a uniform while on duty. Parks Canada will provide required uniforms in accordance with its Uniform Policy.
• Work in both workshop and outdoor environments, on a variety of terrains, including on water, at heights, in confined spaces, and in high-traffic areas.
• Lift, carry, and handle heavy materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Be exposed to dirt, noise, inclement weather, and extreme temperatures.
