The Quebec Waterways unit manages five historic canals stretching from Montreal to the St. Lawrence, Richelieu and Outaouais rivers. These canals are situated in three important tourism regions in the province and also have numerous collaborations with important stakeholders and partners.

Who is eligible: Persons residing within 75 km of Carillon Canal (Quebec), Chambly Canal (Quebec), Lachine Canal (Quebec), Saint-Ours Canal (Quebec) or Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal (Quebec).

Duties

Do you like manual work, being outside and seeing concretely the fruit of your efforts? This position is for you! The work of a lock and bridge attendant requires rigor, resourcefulness, and good physical fitness.

You will be responsible for operating locks and/or bridges*, maintaining grounds, structures and equipment, and providing courteous service to users in accordance with Parks Canada standards.

The position is physically demanding and mainly works outside (more than 10 hours a day, exposure to sun, rain and bad weather). You will walk long distances on various terrains, use stairs or ladders and could lift loads up to 20 kg.

Your main tasks:

  • Paint, clean, weed, mow, empty bins and maintain sanitary facilities.
    Remove debris from the water, clean bird droppings and keep the area safe and clean.
    Answer visitors' questions and ensure compliance with regulations.
    Use various tools and equipment (lawnmower, pressure washer, drill, boat, golf cart, etc.).
    Perform certain administrative tasks using computer tools.

* The locks of the Canal-de-Chambly have mechanisms that are operated manually.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this process is to fill twelve (12) term, full-time and/or part-time positions for the period from May to October 2026. Successful candidates may be offered an annual contract renewal.

 📍 Workplace: Carillon Canal (Quebec), Chambly Canal (Quebec), Lachine Canal (Quebec), Saint-Ours Canal (Quebec) or Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal (Quebec) 

This process can also be used to create a list of qualified candidates for similar positions with different job statuses (including Indeterminate positions), security levels and language profiles in the same location or elsewhere across the country. 

💼 Positions to fill: 12

💰Hourly range: $28.61 to $31.11 (salary under review).

🎓 Education :

  • Secondary diploma or acceptable combination of education, training and experience relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

💬 Language requirements:

  • French essential or Bilingual Imperative (--B/--B)

✨ Experiences: 

  • Experience providing customer service.
  • Experience in general maintenance of buildings, grounds, or equipment.
  • Experience using work-related computer software (e.g.: Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word, Outlook, etc.)

🛠️Asset Experiences : 

  • Experience working on a canal.
  • Experience in the field of fluvial navigation

📝 Conditions of employment:

  • Obtain and maintain the reliability check rating
  • Hold and maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s licence recognized by the applicable province or territory.
  • Obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card within one month of hire, at the expense of the employee.
  • Agree to work irregular hours, shifts and overtime and/or weekends and provincial/territorial holidays and statutory holidays as required by the schedule established by the delegated manager. Your remuneration will be set according to the clauses of the collective agreement and the terms of employment that apply to you.
  • You must be willing to work and travel in a variety of terrains and weather conditions while performing your duties.
  • You will have to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • You may be required to wear a uniform while on duty. In this case, Parks Canada will provide you with the uniforms you will need, as per Parks Canada’s Policy on Uniforms
